RMJM Istanbul’s impressive year continues with news that the studio has been shortlisted for an award at the prestigious World Architecture Festival. The nomination, in the ‘New and Old – Completed Buildings’ category is a result of the studio’s work on the Grand Pera, an acclaimed mixed-use project in Istanbul, Turkey. The criteria for the ‘New and Old – Completed Buildings’ category included creative re-use/adaptation, public space/urban design, regenerated city quarters and town centre revitalisation.
The development comprises two neighbouring buildings, one old building which has been restored and one renovated. An EMEK Cinema sits atop the development. Situated in the middle of Istiklal Caddesi in Pera, the most noted, crowed, touristic and commercial road in the city, the Grand Pera fuses modern Istanbul with it’s historic, beautiful past allowing for a unique dynamic in its centre. The design proposal works within this context to provide a new building by respecting and highlighting this historical and creating a contemporary passage.
Sotiris Tsoulos, Principal of RMJM Istanbul, was delighted at news of the nomination and commented: “Grand Pera was a unique exercise for an architect. We had all the challenges possible to address; connecting the city, recreating the block, respecting the existing building, re-positioning the historic theatre. We believe that Grand Pera today symbolises the way forward for future development in ancient cities.”
The 2017 World Architecture Festival will be held at the Arena Berlin from November 15-17 and combines awards, live judging, conferences, exhibitions and networking. You can follow RMJM’s progress and the built up to the festival on our official Twitter page here.
