In 2008 RMJM was approached to undertake the masterplanning for the Al Ain Convention Centre, intended as a concept of the RMJM designed Capital Centre business development model (Phase 4 of the ADNEC Exhibition Centre project).
Designed to be a new landmark development for the city of Al Ain, the master plan was centred around a state-of the-art cultural and convention complex which forms one of three distinct districts created around green oases that form a public heart to the development and reflect the specific character and environment of Al Ain. The modern yet traditional architecture of the districts comprise entertainment, leisure, commercial and residential areas.
These areas offer a complete participant experience, fully integrated with the community, while providing a consistently vibrant mixed-use development. Buildings are arranged around tree lined, shaded courtyards that flow in to the main public oases spaces.
The oases will be planted with indigenous species and habitats so as to increase the biodiversity of the area. A strategy to keep vehicles to the perimeter of the development will help create a safe and rich environment for wildlife and people alike. Where ever possible strategies for conserving water and energy have been introduced, including the recycling of water, the minimal use of water in landscape, and the minimization of heat gains through design.
