Overview

In May 2009 RMJM Sport, based in Hong Kong, won the competitive bid to design a world-class community sports centre for the residents of Dalian, in the Liaoning Province in China. The aim was to create a bold and iconic symbol of Dalian’s commitment to fitness, providing areas dedicated to martial arts, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, fencing, gymnastics, fitness and a 50m swimming pool.

The unique winning design features a floating ‘super-sports floor’ that is suspended from the ground and a roof covered in a grid of north-facing skylights allowing for natural day lighting.

A double skin houses a jogging path that wraps the building, mitigating the cooler temperatures of northern China and reducing the effects of direct sun and glare. The five level complex, completed in 2011, occupies a 10,000 m² site area and 20,000 m² of internal space.
