Royal Commonwealth Pool, Scotland

Completed in 1970 for the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, the Royal Commonwealth Pool was designed to Olympic standards to provide for both training and competitive events. It contains separate swimming and diving pools, a teaching pool and seating for 1,700 spectators.

The pool was used for the 1986 Commonwealth Games and will also host the diving competitions for the 2014 Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow. Granted listed status in 1996, it has also been named as one of sixty key Scottish monuments of the post-war period by the international conservation organisation DoCoMoMo and as one of the most significant modern contributions to Scottish heritage by the Architecture Heritage Society of Scotland. A city landmark, the pool was awarded a RIBA Regional Award in 1970, a Structural Steel Design Award in 1970 and a Civic Trust Award in 1972.
