Princeton University, Bowen Hall, USA
The Princeton Materials Institute is a sophisticated research laboratory designed as a metaphor of materials science, the discipline housed within it. The unusual, rich interplay of materials refers to the history of materials science - a discipline grown out 19th century metallurgy. The abstract, systemic arrangement of the building's elements expresses today's scientific explorations at a molecular level. Multi-disciplinary in nature, the Institute attracts scientists from across the campus to collaborate in a scientific discourse that plays out between laboratory and auditorium, socialised in the three-storey light-drenched atrium and lounges.
Similar to older campus buildings, the 40,000 square foot Bowen Hall is packed with symbolism both in form and ornament. Its overall symbol is that of a silicon cube - the neutral material of materials science - transformed by forces within and without. Inside, the atrium (human habitation) and auditorium (shared knowledge) alter and enrich the interior research cube.
