Kimbolton School: Queen Katharine Building, England
Kimbolton School is an independent day and boarding school with 950 pupils set within the historic grounds of Kimbolton Castle. Following a design competition and interview process, RMJM was appointed to design a new building which would provide six new classrooms and a 100-seat lecture theatre.
The RMJM team designed a passive low energy school building. The classrooms are naturally ventilated and rooftop 'lanterns' draw warm air out and let additional daylight in. Solar gain and glare is minimized by vertical timber sun-breaks and the materials for the building were carefully chosen in association with the client and local conservation officer.
