Columbia University William & June Warren Hall, USA

Capturing the essence of Columbia University's Italianate architecture in a modern abstraction, William & June Warren Hall is fitted into the fabric of Amsterdam Avenue across from Columbia's main campus in Morningside Heights. Using the materials palette of the main campus—red brick, limestone and granite—in different geometric patterns, the robust building houses congenial, interactive case study classrooms wired with the most advanced teaching technologies.

Jointly used by Columbia's business and law schools, the 95,000 SF (8,825 m²) building maximizes personal connections and convenience. From an exterior, glassy stair, light floods the building's two-story, stacked atriums, which are surrounded by classrooms. Students and professors stop and talk in the atriums before and after classes. Advanced, interactive technology is in the fabric of Warren Hall. Public computer workstations are located throughout the facility to allow students and visitors to easily connect to e-mail. Classrooms use connective communication links with the networks operated by the business and law schools.
