Centralised Science Laboratories Chinese University of Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong Centralised Science Building at the Chinese University of Hong Kong houses 80 laboratories for 11 academic departments, distributed on five floors. It sits on a 2,600 m² footprint on a steep site overlooking the Tolo Harbour. Its unique façade curves to blend and complement the rolling landscape whilst softening the impact of the building onto the hillside.
Inspiration for the coloured façade was inspired by the Periodic Table to imply the importance of science to mankind. Environmentally speaking, the façade of glass, argon and laminated panes with coloured film helps to regulate heat and light, thus increasing the thermal and natural lighting comfort of the interior space. It also has an insulating and energy-saving effect.
The project was awarded the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) - Merit Award - Community Building, 2006.
