Bilkent University Prep School, Turkey
Following an extensive masterplan process led by RMJM, Bilkent University commissioned new elementary school and middle school facilities to be added to their main high school building at Bilkent University Prep School (BUPS).
The project brings all of BUPS' K-12 facilities together for the first time into a single complex. Together the project totals approximately 10,000m² and will serve a student population of 700.
Daylight views and the use of local natural materials are the principal design ingredients for the new additions. Exterior walls are composed with deep set bay windows which naturally screen and regulate against sun glare and heat gain. The corridors are 'fractured' at strategic points to create common spaces for social interaction and extensive display and lobby space for the school while the classrooms are all slightly irregular and unique in their shape – a departure from the sometimes bland, institutional classroom design which is often seen in modern schools.
