American International School of Doha, Qatar
RMJM designed new spaces and renovated the existing buildings at the American School of Doha to accommodate the school's expansion from 800 to 1,600 pupils.
Architects designed new middle and high school facilities to complement the existing buildings which were transformed into a state-of-the-art elementary school. The resulting composition is a campus of interlocking courtyards and playing fields featuring a distinct identity for each complex. This solution helps break down the large student population into more manageable groups. Four distinct 'centres' are created: two for the elementary school (lower and upper elementary), along with one each for the middle and high school.
The design promotes best pedagogical practices and ad-hoc social interaction by avoiding the formulaic hallway and boxy classrooms typical of older schools. Interaction between teachers and students is actively encouraged through the extensive use of glass while communal planning and meeting spaces replace the traditional private office.
