American International School of Chennai, India

RMJM designed the 550-student American International School of Chennai as a model of sustainable design.

The 22,000m² school is designed around a series of landscaped courtyards encircled by covered walkways. Fountains provide evaporative cooling and each classroom receives light and air from two sides - important where power failures are common. Courtyards and gardens open eastward to take advantage of afternoon breezes. All rainwater is conserved and used on site.

Locally available materials have been used minimize the building's cost and carbon footprint.
