Overview

Edinburgh Napier University’s new £60m Sighthill Campus creates an exemplar knowledge hub for South-West Edinburgh as well as providing a catalyst for regeneration. RMJM worked in partnership with Edinburgh City CouncilStevenson College and the local community through public consultation to develop a masterplan framework for wider area regeneration. The new campus includes six interlinked buildings, including specialist laboratories and sports complex.

The 24,345 m² buildings retained and upgraded an existing eight storey block from university buildings, of which 13,833 m² were new build developed and integrated around it. The 89-week redevelopment saw the buildings delivered on schedule and within budget.

The campus comprises of two Schools – the School of Life, Sport & Social Sciences and the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Social Care, which brought together on one site, strengthening facilities and cross-discipline collaboration therefore opening up new areas of study.

New facilities include; Classrooms, lecture theatres, specialist teaching rooms, clinical skills laboratories (life-like Hospital Wards, High Dependency Unit simulator suites, crime scene forensics rooms, project rooms, research facilities) a new sports facility, CHP energy plant and centralised administration.

Environmental sustainability is at the heart of the design for the new campus and was awarded a BREEAM “Excellent” rating. Low carbon emissions and effective overall energy performance were a key part of the design.
